Women in the Bible had Courage

Wow this week is just flying! Last weekend was packed full of fireworks, parades, 5Ks and socializing. Through the craziness I made sure to spend time with God each day. I have been working through a study that looks at the stories of women in the bible.

Fourth of July Cookies

I have noticed a reoccurring theme of courage. The study began with the first women God ever created; Eve. Eve’s first ounce of courage was shown when she confessed her sins to Adam. It took even more courage to place her sins in front of God. It is often easy to run and hide like Adam and Even did in the Garden of Eden but God wants us to come to him with our trespasses.

I decided to read while the cookies were in the oven

The study walks through the lives of Sarah and Rebekah in Genesis 18-24. Sarah was much to old to have children but God provided for her and she trusted in the lord to raise Isaac up to be a follower of Christ.

I added red dye but it turned out to be more pink haha

Judges 4 was really inspiring; Deborah was a judge, leader, poet, and prophet. She lead her nation to victory and beat an army of 9,000. Women often get overlooked in the bible but Deborah stood out among the crowd.

13620012_10208993521108937_7374116539205697010_n
Adding the chocolate chips!

The study continued on to Ruth, Esther, and Mary. Mary had more courage than I ever will. She made sacrifice after sacrifice but gave no second thought to saying yes to having Jesus. Mary endured doubts from Joseph, friends, and family. She had to watch her son die on the cross but in the end Jesus saved her just like he saved all of us.

Final dozen in the oven. Red with blue sprinkles!

I have learned a lot about what it takes to say yes to God without hesitation. Am I there personally… no. But I will always be working to better my relationship with God and that means opening my mind to courageous acts and humble responsibility.

Chocolate Chip Cookies were a hit on Fourth of July. Want the recipe!?!? Look on the back of the chocolate chip bag!

Secret tip # 1- Do not cook the cookies for the full time. Take them out right when they are beginning to brown. They will be soft and chewy.

Secret tip #2- Don’t melt the butter; let it thaw before hand.

Let’s get Messy with Science

This was my last week with Region 15 Clover University. We wrapped up Iowa, Johnson, and Washington #CloverU camps with Messy Science Sensations.

62 pre-kindergarten to first grade campers explored slime, bubbling lava lamps, alka seltzer, food coloring dispersed in milk, and elephant tooth paste.

What is elephant tooth paste you ask!?

13315512_10208694771560385_8944160860985221878_n

Peroxide, food coloring, hot water, dish soap, and yeast. Adding the yeast last creates the peroxide to rise and pour out the top in a “toothpaste” like manner. The kids loved this experiment. One asked if he could try brushing his teeth with it. 😉

Let me tell you! 62 five year old campers have loads and loads of energy. If only I was a kid again…

IA 13

Oh trust me… I got my fair share of experiments and fun in this week. Here is my marshmallow tower that I built in Iowa County (reminiscing on the good ol’days when I was at camp haha).

I asked the kids at the end of the day if they liked science and if they could see it as something they continued to explore. Many of the campers agreed they have a love for discovery.

Where is that point in our lives when we get to busy to experiment with our curiosity. Where does it transition from fun to work?

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) based curriculum encourages students to be open minded as they enter all levels of school. Making it more fun and interesting to all ages.  I have seen the goals of STEM in action and I am completely on board with the missions of 4-H and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

IA 1

I have enjoyed getting to work with all three counties. I have a lot of respect for those who work with students. Each camper has a unique personality and background that they bring to the day camps. It is rewarding to watch an idea click and to see learning take place.

Starting next week I will begin Washington Summer Day Camps. Be sure to stay tuned for Bug Mania, Parachute, Oceans Deep, and Babysitting updates.

Seed to Sunflower

This week’s #CloverU Camp was right up my ally! It really tested my teaching abilities as I dug into plant science with second and third graders. Horticulture is my area of interest within my major at Iowa State University. Reading, studying, and testing over the topic was a piece of cake compare to explaining it in a way that would make sense to those who have never heard of the terms: germinate, embryo, and photosynthesis.

I can feel myself growing from a seed to a sunflower with each opportunity I am granted as I express my passion for agriculture. The campers might be exploring the topic but I am learning just as much from them as they are from me!

13.jpg

This summer has really heighted my love for agriculture. Getting kids outside and exploring nature this week is just what we need in a world surrounded by technology. Unplugging and really “Digging Deep” into a topic that feeds, clothes, and provides for us.

18

One of my campers at Iowa County brought this plant up to me and asked why the corn was blue. It gave me an opportunity to explain why seeds are often pretreated and how it helps to decrease the amount of chemicals applied to the soil. It also gave me a chance to explain where the roots and shoots begin to grow from the seed.

12

Speaking of seed growth- can you find the embryo, cotyledon, and seed coat? #CloverU Campers can now point and explain all three to you!

Embryo: Beginning of a new plant.

Cotyledon: Provides food for the embryo.

Seed Coat: Protects the seed.

Next week is Messy Science Sensations. Stay tuned for more. Have a great weekend! 🙂

Campers learn about Antibiotic Residue

Jo Vet 33

This week’s #CloverU theme had me thinking about the antibiotic misconceptions in today’s food industry. Vet Science  Camp was conducted in Johnson, Iowa, and Washington Counties. Both farm and city kids participated in the day camp. #CloverU is open to everyone who has an interest in learning about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

41 campers studied the signs of stress and illness, what to do in situations of panic, and how to properly handle an animal. We began the camp by comparing the stomach of a human to a ruminant. Did you know cows have 4 chambers and that is why they can graze grass and humans can’t? (I am still in my teaching mode haha).

Looking at the difference between intramuscular and subcutaneous injecions; the kids gave blue food coloring shots to bananas.

IA Vet 14
Matty fills his syringe with blue dye

After learning how to give injections to an animal; the campers looked at labels and discovered the importance of dosage, expirations, and uses. Lilly looked at her bottle and asked me, “what is a withdraw period?”

Jo Vet 9

I asked Lilly, “when you take medicine at home do you have to wait a few hours before the Tylenol is out of your system to take it again?” She of answered yes and asked it if was similar in animals. “Do the antibiotics leave their systems too?”

A withdraw period is the length of time the farmer has to wait after giving a medication to an animal before taking it to market. Animals have to be cleared of antibiotics before being butchered due to the risk it proposes to humans.

Records are an important part of this process as they are required by sale barns.

WA Vet 27

The campers wanted to see how the medication leaves our systems over time so we did an experiment to demonstrate this principal. Katie is holding a test tube filled with sodium Hydroxide. I added a pH test solution to her tube which turned the liquid pink. The kids each took turns taking part of the solution from the person’s tube in front of them.

Jo Vet 11

The antibiotic residue leaves the body until it is completely out of the system. Our bodies use it up until we have utilized it all.

Jo Vet 12

After being a veterinarian in training; the kids were ready to play with real animals! We asked the 4-Hers to share with the campers how to care for the animals, signs of stress, and how to handle the rabbit properly.

WA Vet 2

Stay tuned for more on #CloverU. Have a great weekend and remember to make your own decisions when it comes to our food system. Farmers care!

Summer Avocado & Tomato Chicken

13331011_10208783201371075_8689200635067914031_n

Oh My!! Chicken and rice is a must this hot summer! Eating fresh vegetables has been my jam over the last few weeks; I will for sure be making this avocado and tomato blend again!

13412960_10208783203491128_689138361480643121_n

I went to the store Sunday morning and came home with an onion, garlic, green pepper, couple tomatoes, and an avocado. Not only is this recipe delicious; it is light and adds a twist to grilled chicken.

13342987_10208783203171120_2204915253112261155_n

I began by sauteing onion and garlic in a medium pan with a tablespoon of olive oil.

13427865_10208783202651107_3013096449223597341_n

Mom, Megan and I took turns chopping up the green pepper, tomato, and avocado.

13428515_10208783202491103_1355744360107194218_n

After combining the rest of the vegetables to the pan; we finished sauteing by added oregano leaves, cumin seeds, and red wine vinegar.

13419063_10208783202691108_8780489039088653833_n.jpg

If you would have asked me to try avocado a year ago I would have said eww , but now I add it to almost everything!! It is a natural fat that has a creamy texture which helps to thicken the sauce.

13394125_10208783202211096_7090286453742539319_n

Caution: The aroma might be tempting enough to eat the vegetable mix straight out of the pan ;). Just be sure to save enough to share!

13418952_10208783201931089_6392754200873887796_n.jpg

Mom grilled the chicken out on the deck while we were letting the flavors blend together. Once done, we cut the chicken and added it to the red wine dressing.

13344540_10208783201891088_4257597672257666017_n.jpg

Have you ever had sticky rice!? It is one of the best inventions ever!! Anywho, make brown, white, or sticky rice and put it in a giant bowl in the middle of the table!

13332945_10208783201571080_8387669327307085217_n

Now, the most important part of this meal is the presentation! Dress the chicken up with the vegetables you desire and top it over rice to enjoy! I added a glass of wine to my meal (Moscato) to enhance the flavors of the chicken.

Go Green for #FarmSafety

Working with three different extension offices this summer is allowing me to observe many empowering county projects. Today Washington County Extension held a Progressive Agriculture Safety Day.

13308537_1185696551483192_3995898565159903841_o

Seeing the kids excited about Farm Safety put a huge smile on my face. Kids are craving the opportunities to learn and this is the prime age for them to absorb all of the information placed in front of them.

13331092_10208737890958343_4170486883559621523_n

Green: Green for 4-H, Green for Clover Kids, Green for Clover University, and Green for Innovative, Inventive, and Energy. Green is a reoccurring theme throughout Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

Amy Green, WA County Youth Coordinator, even has the last name “Green” as she holds up her hand and says 1, 2, 3, 4H to get the youth’s attention.

13312644_10208737891638360_2882802879631374873_n

Today’s #FarmSafety topics covered equipment safety, disability awareness, gun and PTO safety, hand washing, stranger safety, 1st aid station, and sun, mower, and chemical safety.

13344698_10208738583215649_8790436962611950465_n

Washington County invited a special guest to visit with the kids before lunch. Kaj O’Mara with KCRG weather safety and the mobile weather lab talked with the students about being weather prepared at all times.

13344510_10208738582255625_3900276764023446525_n

Does this look like a typical Iowa day or what!? Haha it might be just my imagination but its very possible that Iowa’s temperature will raise from 34 to 91 degrees in one week. The kids sure had a laugh!!

13346603_10208738582935642_5461955784775448561_n

After lunch the sessions continued with chemical safety. A farm scene was drawn to show chemical drift. Spraying might affect the apple trees, the barns, or even “Sally’s” bike. It is important to be aware of drift potential and the dangers posed to applicators.

13307414_10208738583655660_3434662295936012560_n

The office was buzzing with excitement from morning to afternoon. The kids walked away with #Safety bags, an “All Aboard the Safety Train” t-shirt, and curious minds as they continue to learn about #FarmSafety through actions on their own family farms.

Now GO and be GREEN for #safety; 4-H style!

Welcome to #CloverU

Good Morning and Happy Friday!logo-interior

Welcome to a world where I as an adult get to make messy slime and lava lamps, travel jungle explorations, and get to be a veterinarian for a day! I introduce you to #CloverU; a pre-kindergarten to 5th grade adventure.

Follow #CloverU and Picking Wild Flowers this summer to see the crazy, awesome lessons we have planned! We are still taking registrations so be sure to sign your kids up today (Johnson, Washington, or Iowa County)! I feel empowered to spike a love for agriculture and science in others.

Clover University has been inspired by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). All of the camps are designed to meet one of the topics listed. I have been busy planning away and here is what the summer has to hold:

Vet Science Camp (Grades 4 and 5)

Capture

Vet Science Camp will be filled with black lights, germ glow, banana shots, and ruminant stimulations. Kids will learn how to read/administer feed and medication labels while enjoying a fun “feed mix” snack. We might just bring in live animals to play with! 😉

10 ways to reach 10,000 STEPS this SUMMER

This weekend it was no struggle reaching 10,000 steps. With all of the Summer activities that keep our schedules crammed; it is no brainier why is it is easier to reach our fitness goals. How are you reaching your goals? I would love to hear all about your favorite activities in the comments below.

I love trying new things and keeping my routine fresh. Here are 10 ways that will help me to reach my 10,000 daily steps this Summer.

1.Participating in public challenges

13178916_10205289185183863_788689661914227741_n

Michael, Megan, Caleb, and I participated in a Gladiator Assault Challenge. We ran a 5 mile mud obstacle course and did not come out of the race clean! It was one of the most rewarding runs I have ever competed in. I hope I can sign up for a few more this summer as well as a couple 5K races.

2. Attending Sport Events

13245400_10208660372780437_8639208924652264131_n

Supporting those you care about is both rewarding and motivating. It can be fun to attend sporting events with friends and family. This is Michael’s (brother) first year in trap shooting and I have had a blast cheering him on. Not only do I receive a lot of steps by walking to and from ranges but I leave high on motivation from watching everyone compete.

3. Gardening

13233069_10208660373100445_6376742678435492830_n

Many of you have seen my gardening posts on Facebook. After taking a few Horticulture classes at Iowa State University I now  have a green thumb. I don’t know if I necessarily believe that but confidence is key right!? haha.

4. Fishing

13255985_10208660371940416_9135552200360944826_n

I have been fishing a few times this Summer and I have my pole in my car ready to go for next time! I enjoy the calm, stillness of the water and the pure enjoyment I receive just by being outside. You would be surprised how active fishing can be!

5. Running/Walking

13230229_10208660375060494_685867639079772561_n

Running is one of my favorite forms of fitness. I love challenging and pushing myself to go further. Running at school verses home looks different. I have to be a little more cautious when jogging at home. The hills and country roads can be dangerous so watch out for me and other runners on your way home!

6. Exploring

13220903_10208660374460479_8462549562327482173_n

I found this trail in Ames and my oh my was it beautiful! Last week my friend Mo and I hiked around lake McBride; we got to talking and time just flew. Stumbling across trails can be an excellent way to reach 10,000 steps.

7. Dancing

13138799_10209824465636905_6139322603225022453_n

Kassie and I went out dancing and I achieved 10,000 steps within an hour!! Enough said 🙂

8. Chores

midnight.PNG

Being a farm kid generates a lot of steps! Opening gates, walking buckets of feed to the bunks, and filling tanks can tire a person but trust me I wouldn’t trade it for the world! Chores might look different from person to person but laundry, dishes, and cleaning is a great way to reach your goals.

9. Biking

13239938_10208660717789062_7638342280366164199_n

I am looking forward to taking this puppy out tonight!! I loving adding bicycling to my workout schedule. It is a great change of pace!!

10. Boxing/Home Workout

13263821_10208660718109070_117160081534391223_n

We have a kick boxing set in the basement and even though I am not that good I love getting down there just to throw a good punch! It is a great stress reliever and is fun to try moves I saw on “Never Back Down” haha.

Flowers, Coffee, & The Goals of a Christian Life

Last week Mom, Megan, and I planted the garden and some beautiful flower pots. I felt free being able to unplug for the morning; just soaking in all of our many blessings. So often we rush through our day moving from task to task. Being in the moment is an art that is hard to perfect but every time we practice we get a little closer to really enjoying all of the little things.

flower

My relationship with Jesus is like a growing tomato plant. Not quite mature but the potential is there!

tomatoe

Each time that I read the bible and each time that I attend church I grow another leaf. This summer is an opportunity to follow a path that God had planned for me. I will be coordinating STEM Camps for elementary students (BTW follow me this summer as I embark on a new journey… more to come)!

plant

A few weeks ago I heard a beautiful quote from Harvest Vineyard Church. I find myself rereading it often and wanted to share it with you.

“The Goal of the Christian Life is not to simply get us into Heaven but to get Heaven into us,” Richard Foster.

bible

I find this quote to be simple in words but complex in meaning. It is easier to say that we want to have a personal relationship with God than it is to put in the work and effort to keep that relationship.

While flipping through my bible this morning I found a prayer card from my confirmation days. Bringing me back to the time when my relationship with God was new and thriving;  I plan to utilize this sort of prayer method throughout the summer to keep my motivation high and my time with God beneficial.

ACTS Prayer Method

A: Adoration- praising God

C: Confession-admitting our faults and weaknesses

T: Thank- Giving Thanks for God’s Grace

S: Supplication- Asking God for help for others and for ourselves.

Thank you for reading Picking Wild Flowers. If you would like to try a few other methods of prayer please comment below and I would be happy to message you.

See you next week! 🙂

Happy Mother’s Day

10473115_10203677076841153_5964848148620877374_n

Happy Mother’s Day to the best mom a girl could ask for! I know everyone says that about their own mothers but there is something amazingly special about you! My blog “Picking Wild Flowers” focuses on Faith, Farm, Food, and Fitness but this week I wanted to spend a little time thanking you.

429284_3397724836609_1375200446_n

Between all of the running you do for your three children and the love you show us; you have got your hands full, but it never seems to bother you. While being in college I have really grown to appreciate all that you do for me.

180033_1816719134425_5889816_n

Family has always been a priority to you. Eating dinners together, movie nights, Saturday races, gardening, and much, much more. You have raised three children to be respectful and motivated in all that we do. I hope to be half the mother you are someday!

This year has been a whirl wind and it has gone by in the blink of an eye! I am excited to see what God has in store for all of us.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7  – Love is patient; love is kind. Love is not jealous; is not proud; is not conceited; does not act foolishly; is not selfish; is not easily provoked to anger; keeps no record of wrongs; takes no pleasure in unrighteousness, but rejoices in the truth; love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

Mom, you really know how to balance responsibility and fun!

12718138_10204831287656711_1329958674439473030_n

We really have experienced some crazy milestones together. First person to take me to get my tattoo at 18 and Las Vegas at 21. I have a pretty cool mom!!!

Besides all of the fun we have together; you are always there for me. You are a role model that I want to inspire to be and overall a great mother to all three of your children.
